Orlen Upstream, a subsidiary of PKN Orlen, today starts to make the first of the test wells related with the shale gas explorations.
The first well, out of the two planned for this year, is made by Orlen in Syczyn in the Wierzbica district, Chełm county.
The results of the seismic tests carried out during the first half of the year in this area turned out to be promising. In consequence, PKN Orlen decided to make the wells. Planned length of test sections will slightly exceed 3,000 meters. If the results of these tests are promising, next wells will be made in mid 2012.
The well made by Orlen in Syczyn will be the 11th of such type in Poland, its costs are estimated at US$ 15 million. It will be 3 km deep and the work will take 30 – 50 days. The drilling work is carried out by the Czech MND Drilling & Services. The analyses of samples will take a few months and afterwards the company will make a decision whether to continue the work in this location. By the end of November, directly after the completion of the drilling in Syczyn, the personnel will move to the Niedźwiada district.
Orlen Upstream holds eight licenses for oil and natural gas exploration in Poland. As much as six are in the Lublin area. (Bełżyce, Garwolin, Lubartów, Lublin, Wierzbica, Hrubieszów). 26 licenses were issued for shale gas exploration in that region. (…)
